As our world faces compounded challenges, we run the risk of treating current realities as harbingers of the future. In our collective fear, the signs which tell us that despair and destruction are inescapable can become our prophecy.
“Reality”, however, can be moulded depending on what we choose to “see.”
This is where our imagination becomes our power and remedy, our tool to create desired futures that protect and revere our natural world.
Nature itself is the perfect feast to nourish our imaginations. Like a biological mandala, its elaborate patterns soothe the mind to wander and help us ideate. Any disturbance in the undergrowth, like the ladybird’s labyrinthine search for aphids, conceives in us a moment of marvelled curiosity.
Imagining is not an exercise in utopian dreaming but a reframing of existing realities and a reclamation of what could be. Nature already has the blueprints that signpost how we can coexist and flourish, we just have to look.
Heat increasingly heavy on the senses, everything hums with a slow and disorienting intensity under an orange haze. ‘Too hot’ is too hot for everyone, including the bumble bee who stumbles from flower to flower in an El Niño-like fever.
Lean into the cool greens and calming blues of nature and appreciate that its lush diversity is our sustenance and healing.
Across cultures, imagination in the form of stories and parables have long oriented our societies to build futures that respect and revere nature. Look to their lessons to inform your own imagination about what futures we can create.
The peacock is associated with Saraswati, the Hindu Goddess of the arts and education, and Hera, the Queen of the Ancient Greek Gods. It is viewed across many cultures as a symbol of nature’s iridescent beauty and spiritual grandeur.
And finally, in those moments of doubt about how we can turn the tide, spend time reconnecting with nature itself.
Stay still for a moment and these microcosms of life will whisper their stories of growth and regrowth, reveal their delicate yet vibrant dances with the changing seasons. They will offer awe-inspiring encounters with the wildlife that lives alongside us and invoke a familiar feeling of childlike discovery.
